Protein as genetic material ?

It was once thought that DNA was too simple to bear genetic Information. P.A. Levene elucidated the chemical composition of DNA in 1920s but he mistakenly believed that DNA is only 4 nucleotides long. Because of his influence partly, biologists believed that DNA is too simple to bear genetic information and it is encoded on proteins as they are large molecules.
